Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
I was hoping to get some good recommendations on a 9mm handgun. I already have a Glock 19. I was thinking about getting a second Glock, the full size Glock 17. That said, I am leaning towards getting something different for my second gun. Variety is the spice of life as they say.
So far, I been looking at the Beretta 92fs and the Sig P226. I would appreciate any additional recommendations. Thanks. |

Two of my faves, the HK P7 and the Browning Hi-Power:

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
I'm not a huge fan of "plastic" guns, but I've been shooting a S&W M&P 9 Pro lately and really liking it.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
Bersa Ultra concealed (UC) 9mm metal frame, easy shooting and not picky about ammo. Runs about $ 375 Bersa does not advertise but by word of mouth. Also carries a lifetime warenty. Also a Highpoint carbine model 995 -- 9mm-- 10 shot - sweet shooting rifle eats all ammo no problem. 2 guns same ammo also the 16 inch barrel increases the power of the bullet by 30 percent due to the 16 inch travel.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
Not bad suggestions so far. I would lean toward Beretta or Sig, if not another Glock...
+1 on the CZ-75 PO1, Browning HP, Springfield XDM |
Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
The CZ, Sig and Browning are all excellent choices. The Beretta is a POS in my opinion.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
The H&K P-7 is the only 9mm I carry as a primary but unless you have deep pockets I can't recommend one. These have always been expensive and now the price of magazines has gotten outrageous at 70 bucks apiece. Today my choice would be a S&W M&P compact or a Springfield XD.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
I have owned a Sig Sauer P226 for 17 years, and I would not trade it for any other 9mm.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
I just shot my new Springfield XD .40 Subcompact (3" barrel), and I liked it very much. The 9mm should be just as good, and if you want full size, they come in 4" and 5" barrels, too, and with bigger grips.
I have Sig P229s in 9mm and .40 S&W - also good, reliable pistols. As noted before, the CZ-75 P-01 is an excellent choice, especially for carry. It's one of my favorites, and quite possibly the perfect CCW pistol. Don't confuse it with the SP-01 - it's also a good pistol, but it's a full size. I don't recall seeing too many people that don't like Berettas. I've got two of the 92-FS in 9mm, and a 96-FS which is .40 S&W. I obviously like my Berettas a lot if I've got three of them. Mine are made in Italy - I don't know if there were any issues with the Beretta USA models that would steer people away. |
Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
If you already own a G19 than buy a second one as a back up. You should always own at least two of your primary carry/defensive weapons. The manual of arms will be identical, magazines will be the same, spare parts will be the same and God forbid you have to use your firearm for self defense, the police will borrow it for months (even if it is a good shoot). Is this the time you really want to be carrying a new gun that you are not as proficient at? The G19 is one of the finest 9mm pistols ever conceived. Two is one and one is none. While this is not the sexy answer you may have been looking for, you know it is the truth.:coolbeer: Bx3

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
I have a few Beretta 92's. As do my friends. We've shot two hundred rounds a week though them for the last few years.
They've got some issues, yes. But all the ones I saw were on well shot guns. I've also seen Glock, Sig, H&K, Springfield, and a few 1911's fail or malfunction. Magazines are still relatively inexpensive compared to others. Plenty of holster choices. You don't need an aftermarket barrel to shoot lead cast bullets. |
Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
Lifetime warranty on the Springfield Armory, even if not the original owner. First rate treatment from Springfield Armory customer service from my experience.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
I'd recommend a glock 19 too.
But if you want something different then my real recommendation is for the CZ-75b or the 85b. I have a CZ-85 (pre-b) and I love shooting it. Its an awesome handFUN and I much prefer it to my wifes G17. There is a little issue finding a holster for a cz75b but they are out there. I have one ordered right now for my 85...has a 15 week wait though for it to be custom made. I put the order in about 3 weeks ago. |

I would go with the sig 226. To me glocks feel like toys compared to the sigs.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
Good to see a few CZ suggestions in there. Awesome guns. Mine is a phantom polymer. Last sunday I was about half way through my time on the range and something remarkable happened. It just turned from being a nice gun into being this amazingly accurate smooth marvel of modern engineering. It's like it slipped into some kind of groove or something. I wished I had more ammo because I didn't want to stop shooting.
I also like the XD's, haven't tried any compacts or subs. Hi-power are also very good. I think if I was going full metal I'd still choose the CZ SP01 Shadow over a Hi-power. I didn't mind the baretta 92's either. |

If you really want something different get a 1911 in .45 ACP.. Other than that stick with the Glock. |

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
You don't say that the new 9 mm is going to be backup, just that you want a little variety. Get a Walther P1. It's a post-war version of the P38, with an alloy frame instead of all steel. They're cheaper than the 38s, lighter, and cost far less--I paid about $300 for mine, and that was high for that time. It's one of those pistols everyone at the range will ask about.

Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
Two is one, one is none.
I crap you not. |
Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
+1 on the BERSA 9 UC.
I have and carry the .45 version and love it. |
Re: Need recommendations on a 9mm handgun
If price is not an issue, buy the H&K P7. Otherwise I agree with Bx3.... buy a second G19.

For less than $400, Taurus 92 can not be beat. I've had several in different configurations and loved them all. :ok:
